In late 2006, Deloitte Consulting LLP began a research initiative to explore how boards of directors are approaching information technology (IT). Phase I of this research represents the findings from more than 30 interviews with directors and senior executives. These findings have been captured in the point of view: "What the Board Needs to Know About IT: The Board's Role in Leveraging Technology as a Strategic Resource." Phase I revealed a critical gap between how boards are addressing IT and what they need to know about IT. The report includes the following findings: IT has dramatically evolved as a critical business lever, elevating it to a new level of importance for the board The prevailing belief that IT is an important matter for the board to consider is not consistently acted upon in the boardroom IT value measurement, business risk and information security are top-of-mind issues for board members, but effective management oversight remains elusive
