The identity repository serves as the storage container for identity data and facilitates the passing of this data to and from other business applications. The identity repository becomes the key to linking disparate identities from separate applications and also provides an enabling foundation for additional identity-driven functionality (such as Public Key Infrastructure, or PKI, biometrics and personalization). Identity repositories are usually maintained with one or more LDAP-compliant (LDAP is Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) or relational database products. The benefits of this component are improved quality of user data, decreased development time for authentication solutions and a single point of user identification.
