Not since the gold boom of the early 1980’s have we experienced a period when mining stocks maintained such high returns fuelled by buoyant demand. Despite the importance of mining to the global economy, the industry has lost much media and investor attention to sexier and younger peers such as the bio-technology and information technology sectors. As a matter of fact, one has to go back over 50 years to find an article dedicated to mining in the Harvard Business Review. This situation has now changed. The September 2006 edition of the Harvard Business Review carries an article, authored by Deloitte, about how to manage the HIV/AIDS risk in the industry while improving shareholder returns.
