We are actively involved in biometric standardisation activities, research and test projects as well as public education about this emerging technology and its applications. Biometric Identity Verification Course @ EPFL in Lausanne
The University of Lausanne (EPFL) has invited Bori Toth, our Biometrics Lead, to give a lecture on the commercial applications of biometrics as part of their educational seminar series on this topic. EPFL has three core missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. The course is taking place between 30 April to 3 May in Lausanne, Switzerland and is designed to provide valuable insights into the state-of-the-art in biometric identity verification, from both a theoretical and practical points of view.

Facial recognition within the public sector
The International Biometric Foundation and Smart Card Club invited Deloitte to present at their joint meeting on 6 February 2007 in London. The meeting was set up to address some critical issues facing the national adoption of biometric technologies incorporating smart platforms. Our presentation reviewed the latest public sector initiatives to use facial recognition.

Digital Identity Forum
The 7th annual Digital Identity Forum, organised by Consult Hyperion, took place in London on 2/3 November. The goal of the Forum was to encourage discussion and debate around the real issues at the heart of electronic identity in all its forms. Deloitte was asked to organise and chair a session on biometrics. The session addressed the growing importance of biometric identification and authentication within the public sector and healthcare in particular.

Biometrics 2006
The 9th annual World Conference and Exhibition on the Practical Application of Biometrics took place in London on October 18-20. Deloitte has been asked to present alongside the National Physical Laboratory to reveal the final test results and lessons learned during the joint biometric performance testing project. The title of the presentation was "Latest Biometric Test Results: Performance, Quality & Interoperability."

I-4 (International Information Integrity Institute) Forum 58
Following up on the success of our presentation at I-4 in 2005, Deloitte was invited to organise and chair a biometric session at Forum 58 in Antwerp. On Wednesday, 14 June we discussed technical advances and recent implementations, and explored emerging legal implications of biometric implementations that go well beyond privacy issues.

Enterprise Security 2006
On March 8 in London, an exclusive one-day management conference took place, designed to inform and inspire today’s business and IT security specialists and risk managers. In a packed agenda, the event offered cutting edge insights into a number of today’s and tomorrow’s key IT and management security issues. Deloitte took part in the "Authentication, federation and identity management" panel debate.

Smart Card IDSummit
Integrating sophisticated smart card technology and the latest in biometric capability is currently the hottest topic in identity management. It promises enormous benefits but also presents serious challenges for those charged with its development, implementation and management. Deloitte presented on 'The future of biometric data: from fingerprints to DNA analysis', at the Smart Card ID Summit, which took place ib 23-24 March in the Courthouse Hotel Kempinski in London.

European e-ID Card Conference
A number of Member States have introduced electronic ID card (e-ID) schemes, whilst others are planning to do so. In order to prevent these developments from creating new digital barriers across borders, a set of minimum requirements and common standards must be agreed to enable European e-ID solutions to interoperate. This conference took place on 23 February in Brussels to discuss e-ID related issues, challenges and solutions. Deloitte delivered a presentation on the topic of "Interoperability Issues in Biometric Systems".

Information Age Identity Theft Webinar
Identity theft is one of the most damaging and frightening computer-aided crimes to emerge in the information age. Research in both the US and in Europe shows that it is not only becoming increasingly common but that individuals are so frightened of falling victim that it is undermining their trust in e-commerce. What can be done? And specifically, what can businesses operating through the Internet do to prevent their customers falling victim to identity theft and thereby maintain or restore confidence in their online brands? And what role can technological solutions play? On February 20th at 2.30pm, a panel of experts moderated by Andrew Lawrence, editorial director, Information Age met to debate the best answers to these issues. Deloitte has been asked to outline the importance of biometrics to prevent identity theft. Key findings of Deloitte's most recent ID theft survey that examined the impacts in the financial services industry were also presented.

Identity in 2006: Convergence of Government, Industry and Citizens
Identity is becoming a major corporate, political and social issue. Identity systems developed to support and facilitate corporate information security are now being applied across commerce and society, with unknown consequences for the citizen. Public awareness of privacy and security threats is rising, and government is paving the way with a National Identity Cards scheme, but can technology rise to the challenge? What impact will it have on businesses? And what will be the key issues to watch over the coming year?
This Enterprise Privacy Group Identity Special Interest Group (EPG-IDSIG) event on 2 February in London will focus on current and emerging issues in the fields of identity and privacy. Deloitte has been invited to join the 'Towards Better Identity' panel session.

Royal Holloway, University of London Authentication and Identity Management (AIM) Club
The AIM club consists of experts from academia and industry, providing the opportunity for excellent knowledge sharing. Deloitte joined the discussion on 15 December and covered various biometrics-related issues through delivering a workshop 'Technical, economical and social aspects of biometrics'. The aims were to highlight common problems, to exchange views and to share ideas about future developments. Interim findings of the biometric system assessments carried out in co-operation with NPL were also presented.

Aurora's 4th National Biometric Facial Recognition Conference
Aurora, a leading provider of face recognition solutions in the UK has organised its 4th national biometrics conference to take place on 7-8 December in Birmingham. Deloitte has been asked to present on current issues, market situation as well as on the interim findings of the biometric system assessments carried out in co-operation with NPL.

ISSIG Workshop on Information Security: Biometrics, WLANs and E-mail
The Information Security Special Interest Group (ISSIG), affiliated to the IIA UK & Ireland, provides a forum for internal auditors and security professionals to discuss topics related to information security. ISSIG organised a one-day event to cover hot topics relating to developments in biometric techniques for the protection of information assets; Risks, controls and auditing of wireless LANs; legal and regulatory compliance issues for achiving E-mail; and securing E-mail. Deloitte has been asked to present on the topic of 'Biometrics in the Corporate Environment.' The event took place on 24 November in Birmingham.

Publication in Chartech Magazine
Our 'Biometrics in the Corporate Environment' article appeared in Chartech, the IT news magazine of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales in October 2005. This paper discusses the main success factors that need to be met for biometrics to become widespread in the corporate environment.

Biometric Consortium 2005
Following our involvement with NIST representatives in March (see below), who are part of the Biometric Consortium committee, Deloitte has been invited to present at the 2005 conference on iris recognition related spoofing and countermeasures.

Publication in ISACA Chapter Switzerland
ISACA Chapter Switzerland brought out a newsletter dedicated to biometrics earlier this year in June. The newsletter was distributed to some 1400 IT security professionals in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Deloitte was asked to contribute and we have chosen to summarise the controversial ID card discussions across Europe through our article ‘ Biometric ID card debates.

London School of Economics and Enterprise Privacy Group
Enterprise Privacy Group partnered with the London School of Economics and the Financial Times to facilitate a series of Expert Panel debates about the potential impact and benefit of identity cards on UK businesses. These meetings drew together representatives of business, government and academia to obtain a unique insight into the Identity Cards Bill, and what it could achieve for the UK. Deloitte provided views on the implications of including biometrics into ID cards for the final Identity Project report.

CEN eAuthentication Committee
As part of this committee we helped define an EU standard for meeting the requirements of a smartcard-based multi-application European electronic ID.
