The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) held its 34th annual Legislative Summit July 22–25, 2008 in New Orleans. Bob Campbell, vice chairman and U.S. state government leader, Deloitte LLP, was asked to be part of a panel presentation based on the concepts presented in a recent Deloitte Insights podcast: "The Wolf at the Door: Taking Aim at the Fiscal Crisis." The panel, which also featured Michigan State Senator Michael Bishop and Karl Spock of the Sunset Advisory Commission, was tasked with exploring proven cost reduction strategies to balance state budgets; discussing how to turn the current fiscal crunch into an opportunity to conduct the business of government more efficiently and effectively; and how to use sunset evaluations to rethink the status quo and explore cost savings. Campbell’s portion of the presentation focused on “Responding to the Economic Downturn – Driving Lasting State Transformation.” Watch his summary of the presentation below.
