Building a UK competitiveness policy

Business and government must jointly own the competitiveness agenda

Creating an attractive location for business is central to government economic policy. The fact the UK is ranked sixth is positive and encouraging for the UK government. There is no doubt the UK is viewed as one of the best places to do business. The recent announcement of nearly £25 billion of acquisitions of UK companies by foreign entities in a single day is in itself a long-term vote of confidence in the UK.

The challenge for policy makers is to enhance the UK as a future destination for business as the world opens its doors. This is a huge challenge and, with the acceleration of globalisation, calls for speed and agility from policy makers – and a stronger dialogue with business.

"Globalisation is quickening its pace. If the UK is to remain competitive in the battle for investment and wealth creation, business and government need to take action."
