A strategic approach to effective charitable donations
Highlights and guidance that might be factored into your strategy
A strategic approach to effective

With UK citizens having recently contributed over £400 million to the Disasters Emergency Committee Tsunami Appeal, the country’s charitable instincts are in excellent shape.  Additionally, the tax reliefs available for charitable giving are comprehensive and generous. We therefore feel that now is an appropriate time to explain the tax reliefs for private clients, provide guidance as to how to construct a ‘giving strategy’ and highlight some issues that might be factored into that strategy.

Deloitte are delighted to be working with New Philanthropy Capital (NPC), whose approach is similar to ours. We aim to provide our clients with well researched ideas and insights, deriving from clear analysis and smart thinking. We also try to optimise our clients’ positions, whether in their tax and financial affairs or making charitable donations effectively.

We all have a varying propensity to give to charity; as advisers we are able to assist the process through:

  • Advising you how to maximise the tax efficiency and structure of (or Exchequer contribution to) any gifts; and
  • Financial planning to ensure that the impact of your giving strategy is understood.

This may be confirmation that the amount to be given is appropriate or quantifying the capacity to make gifts in the context of available wealth.
