Enterprise data management (EDM) can help companies provide the right information to people every time they need it to do their jobs. However, many companies don’t realize what it takes, not only from the business information technology (IT) side, to effectively manage all the organizational data. Jane Griffin, principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP and national service line leader for the Information Management practice, explains how a well-organized data governance initiative can make EDM a realistic goal that can be reached and maintained. The goal of data governance is to harness the resources and technologies needed to attain a reliable, enterprise view of a company’s data to:
- Increase data consistency across the enterprise
- Increase accountability and ownership for enterprise data
- Realize more effective data security
- Mitigate risk — especially with respect to regulatory compliance issues
- Improve information quality to improve decision making
