Embracing Disruption: How Consumers Are Transforming the U.S. Health Care System
Deloitte Insights podcast

If the U.S. health care system is in crisis — and just try to find someone who says it isn’t — and it’s going to be fixed, any solution will have to take into account the attitudes and behavior of the people whom the system is supposed to serve in the first place.

doctorIf the U.S. health care system is in crisis — and just try to find someone who says it isn’t — and it’s going to be fixed, any solution will have to take into account the attitudes and behavior of the people whom the system is supposed to serve in the first place. Forget about the old stereotype of the passive patient who sits on an examining table and says little more to the doctor than “uh-huh.” Think instead of consumer activists who are searching for quality care and are willing to go outside the traditional health care system to get it.

Highlights:

  • There are a number of myths about the consumer’s role in health care. What are these myths, and why is it so important to debunk them? (2:10)
  • How popular are alternative services and treatments with consumers? (15:38)
  • Which sources are consumers consulting to obtain credible information about their health care? (20:30)
  • It’s clear that consumers are influencing the health care system in important ways. What do you think the implications are for providers, life sciences, health plans and the government? (37:25)
