A year after Deloitte first surveyed Canadian companies on their GHG emissions management activities, public attention on climate change has increased to unprecedented highs. Corporations are becoming attentive to the business implications of climate change. Investors and stakeholders are demanding transparency and disclosure about how management and boards of directors are adapting to present and future conditions. Carbon-emitting companies are under particular scrutiny, as the pressure to manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions continues to rise. Companies that act now to address the many uncertainties GHG emissions can position themselves favourably for whatever future scenario unfolds. Success will require appropriate strategic planning and broad-based enterprise risk management. Deloitte’s second annual GHG emissions management survey asked organisations how they are managing their GHG emissions policies and activities. The results reveal some ongoing obstacles, along with optimistic anticipation of profit potential in evolving technologies and climate change response strategies.
