From Ladder to Lattice

Mass Career Customization™ (MCC) is based on the insight that today’s career journey is no longer a one-size-fits-all climb up the corporate ladder, but instead a series of rising and falling phases of engagement that can involve climbs, lateral moves and planned descents. As a result, the corporate ladder is becoming obsolete as a model for career progression and is already giving way to a model we term the corporate lattice™. Many knowledge workers are already building lattice-like careers by moving in and out of organizations, or up and down hierarchies, often without support or structure from their employers.

By implementing MCC, organizations will have a discretionary, rules-bound framework that anticipates and drives change, in effect building adaptability into the organization. It creates transparency and openness through collaboration between the individual and the organization.

Drawing on the success of mass product customization for inspiration, MCC allows organizations to continuously match employees’ needs and evolving life circumstances with the needs of the business. Mass product customization has produced business benefits in three areas: reduced costs, increased profitability through value pricing, and greater customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. MCC produces similar benefits: reduced acquisition and retention costs, increased employee satisfaction and productivity, and greater loyalty through optimal career-life fit.
