Economist's corner

In "Economist's corner" we present the latest thinking from Deloitte Research's leading economic experts, Carl Steidtmann and Ira Kalish. It includes a series of monthly articles highlighting current economic issues from both a global and U.S. perspective. The articles cover a broad range of topics, from the effects of revaluing the Chinese currency to trends in labor productivity. Economist's Corner also includes a quarterly U.S. Economic & Market Review, written by Carl Steidtmann. The review provides an analysis of the U.S. economy and stock markets and also considers issues and events which could impact future performance. We also present Deloitte Research's "Leading index of consumer spending," a monthly indicator of U.S. consumer activity.

Carl Steidtmann, based in New York, is Deloitte Research's chief economist and also director of consumer business research. He is recognized in the U.S. as an expert on economic forecasting of retail sales activity, consumer trends, technology and general economic trends. His articles for "Economist's corner" will focus on the U.S. economy. Los Angeles-based Ira Kalish is our director of consumer business research. He is an expert on global economic issues as well as the effects of economic, demographic and social trends on the global retailing and consumer products industries. In this series, Kalish will write about global economic issues.
