Learn more about the experiences of Deloitte professionals in volunteerism through the volunteer profiles below. | Jeff Benesch
Jeff, a senior manager in Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Strategy and Operations service area, advises many of the world’s leading technology companies on major investment decisions, which have far-reaching implications, and then helps implement those recommendations. His business acumen is greatly valued, and not just by his high-tech clients. A couple of local nonprofit organizations with whom he volunteers also reap the benefits of Jeff’s knowledge and expertise. And in return, he has found unparalleled opportunities for leadership and skill development. | | Scott Haveman As a senior manager at Deloitte, Scott works in the Enterprise Risk Services practice, assessing compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, working with management on risk mitigation and optimizing information systems for manufacturing clients. Two years ago, he took on a project outside of his regular client work when he agreed to serve as site leader for an IMPACT Day project at Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. The project – sorting and packing food – was rewarding, but the leadership at both Gleaners and Deloitte realized the volunteers had something far more valuable to contribute: their professional skills. | | Sara Miller
For Sara, a tax senior in Deloitte’s Houston office, professional development results not only from her day-to-day work, but also by volunteering in the community. Soon after joining Deloitte, Sara began volunteering for Junior Achievement (JA), a nonprofit organization that prepares young people for the global economy through educational programs that focus on business, citizenship, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics, financial literacy and career development. She signed up as a JA classroom volunteer because she liked working with young people, but soon found the experience would teach her a few things, as well. | | Monica Munoz
Monica, a senior associate who does forensic accounting and litigation support in the Financial Advisory Services practice at Deloitte, didn’t want just any job when she graduated from the University of Southern California in 2005. She wanted to work for a company that not only allowed her to utilize her finance degree, but also shared and supported her passion for volunteerism. She was thrilled when the topic of community involvement came up frequently in her Deloitte job interviews, saying "The opportunity to contribute to the community is something Gen Y really wants so, for me, it was a big bonus. There were not a lot of comparable organizations." | | Matt Schwenderman In addition to a strong background in finance and consulting, Matt, a principal for Deloitte Consulting LLP, brought a depth of knowledge about the nonprofit sector to Deloitte when he joined in 1998. That’s because he had spent seven years in senior management at the Philadelphia Zoo, where he served as finance director, vice president of finance and, ultimately, senior vice president of business affairs. While there, he learned the many nuances of the nonprofit world versus the for-profit world, but also came to understand that, regardless of profit orientation, many organizations face universal business challenges. | | Rajiv Gupta Rajiv, a senior consultant at Deloitte, credits his volunteer efforts with playing a large role in his professional success and rapid promotion. Early on in his tenure at Deloitte, volunteerism appealed to Rajiv because represented an opportunity to contribute to the community, while also serving as a significant development opportunity. As a result, he volunteered to help organize IMPACT Day (Deloitte’s national day of volunteerism) and was able to showcase his broad range of professional skills and strengths in ways that might not have been possible in his day-to-day role. |
