Pro-Bono Case Studies

We have many examples of our Pro Bono work with nonprofits. Here are snapshots of just a few.

Capital Area Food Bank
The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is the largest Washington, DC based non-profit organization focusing on abating hunger and providing education on nutrition. It distributes over 20 million pounds of food each year through its 700+ member agencies in the National Capital Region.

Deloitte volunteers worked with CAFB leadership to develop a strategic plan that specifically addressed annual giving and the organization’s newly acquired building. Deloitte developed several warehouse management strategies including a revised layout of the warehouse floor (allowing for better accessibility of high turnover and perishable items); streamlining operations by optimizing product shipping, receiving, and storing practices based on space requirements and special storage and handling needs (i.e. items requiring refrigeration, etc.), and improving service to the member agencies by analyzing and coding products upon receipt to improve day-to-day operations and allow less waste of perishable products.

In addition, Deloitte volunteers teamed with CAFB staff to develop a presentation for the Board of Directors to help them better understand the issue of hunger in Washington, DC. CAFB Executive Director, Lynn Brantley, noted that the presentation “impacted the board significantly, truly engaging them, bringing them a greater understanding and moving them to action.” A social impact video was also produced for use in pursuing major donors, engaging volunteers, and allowing current donors the opportunity to see the effectiveness of their contributions.

Catholic Charities
A team of Deloitte retail consultants helped the Catholic Charities Thrift Stores in Dallas with a revenue optimization project. The team analyzed the layout, product assortment, pricing and promotions at three local stores, whose merchandise and proceeds benefit the community. Following the project, Catholic Charities reported an immediate and sustained sales spike; revenue was up 20-25% year over year for each month since the project’s completion in June 2006.

College Summit
College Summit is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to seeing that all college-ready students, regardless of socio-economic background, go to college.

A team of Deloitte consultants worked to develop a reporting warehouse to help College Summit more efficiently measure and analyze which programs and methods are most effective in encouraging students to go to college. As a result of the reporting warehouse, reports that previously took 15 hours to complete, now only take 2.5 hours, which allows College Summit employees to spend more time conducting the critical analysis that will ultimately get more low-income students into college.

Goodwill Industries
Deloitte’s work with Goodwill Industries in Washington, DC involved addressing many operational issues including building greater capacity in its fundraising processes, dealing with issues of uneven customer service, and issues of productivity and accountability in one particular function - all of which were limiting the organization’s ability to help its constituencies of people with special needs.
After several pro bono projects, Goodwill’s overall organizational capacity and effectiveness has been enhanced, they have a new prospecting database that allows them to track and cultivate donors, they’ve seen improvements in customer service training and delivery – and the organization has seen significant growth overall, particularly with improved communication and cultivation of constituents, in areas of financial contributions, in-kind donations, and increased revenue from the Goodwill stores.

United Nations Development Program
Our professionals helped the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in its response to the tsunami destruction in Indonesia. Our team, comprised of people from several Deloitte member firms, helped the UNDP in its efforts to maximize the efficiency and transparency of its tsunami resources. The project facilitated increased country capacity, advanced the UNDP’s goal of focused program development and improved the transparency and accountability of funds distribution related to the tsunami relief effort.

The work was valued at over $5 million and was publicly recognized as exemplary corporate citizenship by Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush in their multiple UN addresses regarding the tsunami relief efforts.
