.jpg) Personalized medicine is the application of new methods of genetic analysis to diagnose, treat and manage disease – or predisposition of disease – on an individual basis. It has the power to transform health care within the foreseeable future, and is already having a disruptive impact on the U.S. health system.
To help increase government and industry awareness of what could be one of this century’s most transformative changes in medicine, it is imperative to examine the incentives for and barriers to investing in and paying for personalized medicine. The ROI for Targeted Therapies: A Strategic Perspective, a soon-to-be-released paper by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, part of Deloitte LLP, addresses the question, “Where is the return on investment (ROI) in personalized medicine?” The paper examines personalized medicine’s economic value proposition and the importance of ROI in advancing the science; presents a framework to quantify personalized medicine’s economic value proposition; and details the components of this ROI framework – the impact on adverse events, life course of care, and the non-economic impact on improved quality of care and life. Readers will be able to use this framework to examine any number of clinical conditions or personalized therapies and calculate an overall ROI to determine what personalized medicine’s incentives and barriers will be by various stakeholder groups: payors, consumers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology developers and manufactures, and medical diagnostic companies. This report will be released January 27, 2009, at the Personalized Medicine Coalition in Washington, D.C.
