As published in The Australian, 23 June 2007 In the current environment of community concerns about climate change, governments as well as industry are seeking to position themselves as initiators and active supporters of measures to address the associated issues. However there are many areas in which the gap between rhetoric and reality is significant, especially with regard to urgently required additions to base load energy generation. The attached article is by Keith Orchison, a former head of both the Energy Supply Association of Australia and the Australian Petroleum Producers & Explorers Association. Originally published in a feature on Clean Energy in The Australian (23 June 2007) it outlines the views of Ron Loborec, National leader of Deloitte’s Energy, Infrastructure & Resources group, on what will really be required if Australia’s need for new base load power is to meet at the same time as the goal of reduced emissions.
