As consumers assume more responsibility for covering their health care costs and gain increased awareness of treatment options, provider quality levels and price differences, they want to take even greater control of their health care decisions. Health plans that recognize and respond to consumers’ requests for increased access to online tools, information and services, and their desires for greater personalization and customization in their benefit plans, could gain a distinct competitive advantage and achieve profitable growth in an emerging retail market. Opportunities for Health Plans in a Consumer-Driven Market, a new report produced by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, part of Deloitte LLP, suggests that there are distinct consumer segments with unmet needs and evolving preferences that present opportunities for health plans to fill the void and become trusted advisors. To capitalize on this opportunity, however, health plans need to consider new strategies, capabilities and investments. Deloitte’s survey suggests that there are three questions health plans need to address: - Unmet needs: Can health plans create new business opportunities and differentiate themselves based on an understanding of the services consumers really value?
- Growth opportunities: What opportunities do health plans have to achieve profitable growth in an emerging retail market?
- Threat of disintermediation: What can health plans do to fend off encroachment by existing and emerging players?
