Shop & Save
2008 Survey of Health Care Consumers
Shop & Save

Shop & Save consumers, which represent two percent of the population, are prone to switching doctors, treatments and health plans, and make changes to their insurance far more than others.

In addition, Shop & Safe consumers:

  • Are more sensitive to the prices of health care services than others.
  • Tend to prefer doctors who use traditional approaches and lean toward allowing doctors to make decisions for them.
  • Are open to alternative and non-conventional settings and are much more likely than others to purchase prescription drugs through mail order or online sources, use a retail clinic, and travel outside their community and the U.S. for care.
  • Take advantage of value-added services offered by doctors, hospitals and health plans, but tend to be less satisfied and less compliant than others.
  • Have the lowest average age (38 years), includes the largest proportion of men (64 percent) and lowest proportion of Caucasians (62 percent) of the six segment groups.
