Risk. The very word suggests speeding cars, perilous cliffs and a glimpse into the abyss. And yet the simple fact is that, to some degree, risk permeates every aspect of our lives — both personal and professional.

Chief audit executives (CAEs) must deal with a full spectrum of risks: fraud, regulatory compliance and internal control, among other issues. The stakes are high; investors, analysts and regulators are monitoring corporate risk management practices more closely than ever before.

But CAEs must recognize that risk has two faces — the traditional domain of risk to existing assets, and the less familiar aspect of risk-taking for reward. Simply put, if properly managed, taking intelligent risks can create value and generate profits.

The market richly rewards companies that successfully take and manage risks. But these activities must be properly focused, integrated and coordinated, and this is precisely the role of internal audit and the risk intelligent CAE to verify that risk management processes and procedures are being properly handled.
