2014 Deloitte China Sustainability Awards

2013 UNDP MNC Sustainability Awards

We are proud to announce the launch of the Deloitte China Sustainability Awards, an initiative supported by The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the aim to encourage and reward best-practice corporate sustainability among multinationals in China. With sustainability’s growing importance in China, this is a dynamic and exciting time for the development of local sustainable corporate practices and we are proud to contribute our grain of sand to rewarding companies who are not only bringing experience and expertise they have gained in developed markets but are also ready to find innovative solutions to tackle their China specific challenges.

The awards recognize companies’ achievements in adopting sustainable business practices under five standard categories, namely leadership, innovation, environment, social performance and community investment. In addition, there will be one theme category focusing on an area of sustainability of particular relevance each year and this year’s award under the theme of “Water Stewardship” will be presented to the company that best demonstrates a leadership approach to water management.

The high profile awards presentation ceremony will offer all participating companies excellent experience-sharing and networking opportunities not only among multinationals, but also with key government bodies, foreign diplomatic missions, foreign chambers of commerce and industry associations in China.

About the Awards

Sustainability is becoming a critical part of operating in China as regulators and civil society are applying more pressure on companies to act "responsibly".  Multinational companies (MNCs) have access to international best practices and are well placed to unlock the potential that sustainable business practices can bring for them and for China as a whole.  

Co-hosting the Awards, Deloitte China and The United Nations Development Programme aim to:

  • reward and encourage the efforts of multinational companies with strong sustainability performance in China
  • highlight the importance of China-focused sustainability amongst MNCs with China – based operations
  • showcase multinational companies best practice sustainability performance in order to shape the current - and set direction for future development of sustainability in China.

Award categories & criteria

The Sustainability Awards consist of five standard awards and one annual theme award. The objective of the theme award is to focus on a particular sustainability area or issue which is becoming a critical factor for companies operating in China. This year, the theme award is Water Stewardship.

The award categories are:  

  1. Leadership Award - given to a company that demonstrates a sustainability leadership or takes a pioneering sustainability role in China.
  2. Innovation Award - given to a company that demonstrates an innovative approach to sustainability implementation or has shown noteworthy initiative for a specific project in a new area.
  3. Best Environmental Performance - awarded to a company that demonstrates 'best in class' performance across relevant environmental indicators affecting key stakeholders. The definition of 'Environmental' in this context is defined in accordance with the GRI G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.
  4. Best Social Performance - awarded to a company that demonstrates 'best in class' performance across relevant social indicators affecting key stakeholders . The definition of 'Social' in this context is defined in accordance with the GRI G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.
  5. Best Community Investment – given to a company that has developed a noteworthy community Investment, program and / or initiative that has brought significant value or contribution to a local community. This award focuses on 'community' or 'communities' as the sole key stakeholder.
  6. 2014 Theme Award - Water Stewardship – awarded to a company that demonstrates a leadership approach to water management.

Eligibility criteria

The Sustainability Awards are open to all multinational companies that fulfill the criteria below:

  • Multinational cooperation's ("MNC's") that are headquartered overseas but with operations that have been registered on the Chinese Mainland, in Hong Kong SAR and or Macau SAR for three consecutive years

How to nominate: Online application

It is easy to nominate your company for the Sustainability Awards. If you work for a MNC, you can nominate your company by filling out the online nomination forms. Each MNC can be nominated for several Awards at the same time as long as all necessary info is provided for each Award category the company is applying for.

When can you start to nominate?
Nominations will be accepted from 1 November 2013.

When does the nomination close?
The deadline for submitting all nominations is 17 January 2014.

When will the winners be announced?
The winners will be announced on 27 February 2014 at the Sustainability Awards ceremony, which will be held in Shanghai.

  2. What are the entry criteria?
    The Sustainability Awards are open to all multinational companies that fulfill the below criteria: Multinational cooperation's ("MNC's") that are headquartered overseas but with operations that have been registered on the Chinese Mainland, in Hong Kong SAR and or Macau SAR for three consecutive years.
  3. How do I submit a nomination?
    To enter the Sustainability Awards you need to complete the relevant Nomination Form, these can be found under the section titled "How to nominate"

  4. What information is required?
    - The information required for nomination depends on the type of Award. In general the information that is required relates to the company's Sustainability governance structure, Sustainability risk and opportunities identification, Sustainability implementation and results achieved. Often this information is typically found in a company's Sustainability Report or similar and it is ok to copy and paste from the report as long as the information pasted is relevant to what the nomination requires.

    - If the sustainability efforts related to China are not disclosed in a sustainability report or similar, information from internal documents can be used. Such Information might be subjected to further inquiries by the Nomination Committee and will be handled with care and kept confidential.

    - Information in English, simplified Chinese as well as information in traditional Chinese may be submitted.

    - It is important to also leave contact details in the nomination (please use designated writing space for this) to allow follow up by the Nomination Committee in case they have questions or if any information is regarded as incomplete.

  5. For how many years has the Deloitte China Sustainability Awards been operating?
    This is the first year of the Sustainability Awards and it will be an on-going annual event from 2014 onwards.

  6. What is the closing deadline for nomination and when are the winners announced?
    The deadline for entries is 17 January 2014. Winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony held on 27 February 2014 in Shanghai.

  7. Does it cost to submit a nomination?
    It's free - there is no fee related to nomination or participation in the Sustainability Awards.

  8. Can I nominate another company?
    No entries must be sent in by the companies themselves
