Digital Transformation in Supply Chain

How operations are going digital

A use case: scaling process digitisation through data strategy

A global pharmaceutical company aims to become a data-driven leader
in the market and is aware of challenges in their data management and use of
data to support processes and decision-making.

It defined a data strategy based on four stages: the establishment of
solid data; building a structured data model; identifying use cases to
support decision-making; and upskilling the workforce.

To embark on the transformation the company started by identifying its current data sources and assessing the best technical solution to bring them together. By the end of the process more than a thousand data sources came together in one platform, enabling a single source of truth for data access and management. This single integrated platform helped develop relevant use cases thatsupported and accelerated decision-making.

One of the use cases is a model that provides end-to end visualisation of the batch history, supporting the company’s manufacturing experts in batch execution analysis and other labour-intensive activities.

To ensure scaling of its capabilities, the company is driving forward
the adoption of new technologies and digitised processes in an ongoing
transformation based on active communication and change management.

Start small on the long journey

Process digitalisation and digital transformation are a journey to new ways of working. The first step is the most important. In Supply Chain, complexity lies with the size of the ecosystem and the cross-functional nature of the value chain. Typically, it’s advisable for organisations to start small, building their capacities and momentum, and then scale.

The challenges are many and a high level of commitment is required. But those who delay risk being left behind.
