Structural change creates jobs

How automation will impact employment in Switzerland

A new study from Deloitte shows that the positive effects of automation in Switzerland will continue to dominate in the future.

The benefits of technological progress prevailed in the past: despite the increased automation of many tasks, the last 25 years have seen a net increase of 800,000 jobs in the Swiss labour market. Automation may have replaced certain jobs, but it has also increased the demand for new workers.

Therefore it is unlikely that we will be running out of work in the future. On the contrary: forecasts indicate that at the macroeconomic level, roughly 270,000 new jobs will be created in Switzerland by 2025.

At the same time, the job market will be changed by ongoing structural transformation: automation will move jobs both within and between industries. For employees this means risks and opportunities alike.

Jobs that require creativity and interaction with people and machines seem to be particularly future-proof.
