Our annual Global Automotive Consumer Study highlights the four key trends that will impact the sector in 2026. It reveals how evolving expectations around electrification, value, digital experiences, and servicing behaviours are reshaping mobility decisions in Belgium.
More than 28,500 consumers from 27 countries around the world, including 1,004 Belgians, participated in our survey from October to November 2025. They provided their opinions on a variety of critical issues impacting the automotive sector, including consumer interest in electric vehicles, brand loyalty, AI-enabled features, and the vehicle service experience.
While lowering fuel costs is a key motivator, it’s not enough to entice Belgians to choose all-battery vehicles (BEVs). The price, range, and charging time remain key concerns, ensuring traditional combustion engines dominate our car parks. For the second year in a row, environmental concerns are fading, and government taxes and incentives are increasingly viewed as barriers to electric vehicle adoption.
Belgians are increasingly interested in the second-hand market and seem less inclined to stay loyal to a brand. The vehicle purchase decision-making process is driven by product quality, price, vehicle performance, and brand familiarity. More than half expect to pay €15,000-€49,999, but younger generations are looking for cheaper options. Cash and loans remain the preferred method of financing, but interesting niches are emerging.
There’s a willingness to pay for vehicle health and maintenance, safety and security enhancements, and driver assistance features. Yet, concerns about data sharing remain high, underlining the need for greater trust and transparency in connected services.
Belgians are weary of AI-enabled customisation that adapts settings automatically, as well as using their vehicles as platforms for integrated services. They like the idea of regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, which would encourage them to keep their vehicle longer.
The importance of creating strong customer relationships through ongoing service interactions is undeniable. When choosing a vehicle service provider, trust is the key driver followed by quality. Most Belgians will turn to authorised dealers, rating the experience based on cost, pricing transparency, and the work performed.
